A Magical Place

I love /k/.  It's one of the more interesting (if slightly insane) areas of the intarwebz.  I was browsing through and fell upon a humor thread, of which I have culled the best and here I present them for your perusal and enjoyment (click to embiggen).
First up, Trolling the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (hhhaawk-ptui!), with Opah Rater and his cousin Mois T. Nougat

I don't know if this BCPGV ad is real or a shoop, but I find it hilarious.

If the Brady's and their ilk were a super hero they's be...

And if they could shape the law in their own image.

Pretty certain they think these are the rules of gun safety.

Like all of 4chan, /k/ delights in pointing out the stupidity of people.  Beginning with the formerly Great Britain.

The press.

The police.

Facebookers

And Mitchell's Mausers (not a /k/ approved vendor),

Of course, /k/ is not above tweeking their own nose.

Helpful /k/ shows you where you need improvement.

Creative bastards, /k/omandos are, and believers in Murphy's First Law of War. They never let common sense stand in the way of a good idea.

Sometimes They point out truth that is so horrifying, you have to laugh, or start crying.

Of course, sometimes they make you laugh until you start crying.

So remember boys and girls, when you need advice, don't go to /k/ but if you want an overabundance of opinion, fact and warped humor, feel free to stop by.  Because:

All images were found on /k/ and are used without permission of their owners.  If you really don't like it, tell me and I'll pull it.

Wassail!

Yesterday marked the begining of the Yule season. The days grow longer, spring is on the way. Marked by celebration, feasting and drinking, Yule will last until January 2nd (hence the 12 days of christmas).

May your season be filled with kith and kin, peace and love, and lots of mead and stout.

Breakfast of Champions

Got the camera up and running. decided to document my morning for all you fine folks (both of you). Since the drinking had been spectacular the night before, I decided to skip the flash photography until I had some food in me. So my friend and I set out on an epic odyssey across the frozen reaches of the great Alaskan wilderness.

See the wilderness?
After an unending trek across this frozen waste, we reached out destination Humpy's Great Alaskan Alehouse. This is one of the best restaurants for local flavor. They also usually have beer.

Upon arrival I was immediately ambushed by the Bloody Mary bar and broke my fast with this. Vodka, Extra spicy Bloody Mary mix, pickled asparagus, reindeer sausage, celery and lime slices, topped of with Cholula hot sauce and pepper.

Escaping after sustaining only one bite we met our friendly waitstaff-type person and were brought frosty beverages. Guinness for her.

And a Moose's Tooth Hard Apple Ale for me (I always think you should have a glass of juice with breakfast).

After perusing the victuals we settled on variations of an old classic; Eggs Benedict. I ordered the classic mode, and she decided upon the King Crab Cakes Benedict. We decided to split a Belgian Waffle (syrup and butter, none of that silly fruit crap).

The home fries were tasty but rather pedestrian, but the hollandaise. The hollandaise is worth starting a knife fight over. Creamy, rich and smooth, salty and just a touch tart.

The crab cakes were crisp, juicy and flavorful, tasting like crab, rather that the herbs and spices of the breading. The eggs were perfect, light and tasty. and the waffle was excellent as well, crisp, light and fluffy. the butter meted and gathered in the wells. torn apart and dipped into the syrup.

By this time we're on the second round. Again with the Guinness for her and i, being ready to start the serious drinking, stepped up to a Midnight Sun Double Chocolate Stout. Holy Cats, wast this thing good. Smooth and velvety with a lovely hops flavor and mild bitterness and a deep yet subtle flavor of chocolate. Our friendly waitstaff-type person suggested ice cream to go with. being skeptical as a matter of nature, I at first scoffed, but when she offered some for free, I could not pass-up the experience.

And damn me if she wasn't right. Vanilla ice cream in double chocolate stout? Fucking awesome.

The bones of out repast picked clean and feeling fit enough to pull the fins off a gundar, we set forth int the glorious sunny Alaskan day.

My Faith in the Power of Metal has Been Restored

I quit listening to heavy metal back when Metallica became pansy artfags and Dave Mustane turned into a giant enema bag. A little White Zombie and some Pantera held me over, but that ended poorly. After that there was fuck-all to keep me in the scene. All the new stuff was screechy and derivative, all boring distortion and growlrock lyrics.

Meh.

But the most wondrous Snarkstress (Straight from the Snark's Mouth) Introduced me to Iced Earth.

From there I discovered Texas Hippie Coalition

And my LastFM account on Xbox Live introduced me to Finntroll. Gotta love scandi-irish tradmetal.

Good listening y'all.

Seven Stylish Things....

So because of my friend Snarky I'm now consigned to tell you wonderful folks about myself. The rules of the game are simple. I tell you folks (both of you) seven things you probably don't know about me, and then I pick fifteen of you to do the same.

1. I am a Norse Heathen; specifically Ásatrú. I believe in the ancestral gods of my people, live by the Nine Noble Virtues and take the Havamal and the Sagas to heart. Make no mistake, I am not an Odinist nor do I feel that my gods are the only gods. I, uh, also tend to get a bit militant about religion. Not so much mine vs theirs, as much as "You leave me and mine alone and we won't re-enact Lindesfarne abbey, with you as the monks."

2. I have PTSD. No, I don't wanna talk about it.

3. I am not a nice man. Friendly, even gregarious at times, but not nice at all.

4. I have very high standards when it comes to friends. basically friends fall into three categories; acquaintances, friends and mates. Acquaintances are those I don't mind hanging out with or talking to but ultimately have zero impact on my life. Friends are important; the kind of people that you help move. Mates on the other hand are people for whom you'd move bodies for. I have few friends and even fewer mates.

5. I am a geek. I listen to filk music, I play roleplaying games, I play tabletop wargames and I write lovecraftian poetry. I know more about video games, comic books and cartoons than an adult should. I play board games and even make my own games. In many ways I'm still a kid at heart.

6. I could care less about sports. Football, handegg, basketball, hockey, rugby, baseball, cricket, all of it; could not give a fuck.

7. For a foodie, I am an unbelievably picky eater. Don't like Veg really. Oh I enjoy the occasional salad , and I like my mirepoix in soups and stews, but just a side of veg? Thank you, no. Also no organs; liver, sweetmeats, eyeballs, haggis, goat anus, none of it. Meat is meant to be cooked, even if only seared; sashimi is not food. Neither is steak tartar. Wine mostly tastes like good juice gone bad, and scotch tastes like rusty isopropyl.

Now for the hard part. Who do I know that blogs, who's not already been tagged?

Jigsaw at Jigsaw's Thoughts
Chris and Heather over at Arma Borealis
Trackerk who runs Geek Warrior
MeatAxe and Atom Smasher of Men Are Not Potatoes
The Minuteman himself Barron Barnett
Linoge of Walls of the City fame.
OldNFO at Nobody Asked Me...
Sailor Curt the Captain of a Crew of One
BobS owner/operator of 3 Boxes of BS

That's all the untagged bloggers I can think of. Now if they're just paying attention...

Lo, How the Mighty Have Fallen.

On the way in to work this evening past I picked up the puppy trainer. Mostly I wanted to check out the story on the Giffords shooting, see if there had been any developments. And you know what? There's only two sections in it. The front page section; local, national and international news. And the Sports section; sports, classifieds and the funny papers.

There was a time when my local paper was a whopping eight sections (nine on Friday, ten on Sunday). Now reduced to two sections. I also seem to recall that back before I went totally cellular for all my telephony needs, I got a call about once a week begging me to purchase a subscription, a weekend only one even.

I guess everyone else got sick of their whiny leftist agenda too.

Thank You

To all who serve.
To all who protect our country.
To all who have heard the trumpet's call,
and answered.
To all those that have ever rode,
towards the sound of musketry.
And to all those who did not ride back.

Thank you.

Of Sheep and Wolves

I keep seeing this Sheep, Wolf, Sheepdog meme bandied about, and I don't like it. I developed this theory independently back when I was about 15. About the time I hit 21 or so I discarded it. It's too simplistic, and demonstrates a juvenile view of both social dynamics and biology.

People are not sheep. People ofttimes display sheep-like qualities for one simple reason. We (as a people) have been lied to. We have been told that it is OK if you fail, so long as you try. We have been told that life should be fair. We have been told that the world owes you a living. We have been told that "If you follow your dream you too can become an astronaut and the president of the United States." People behave like sheep, because we do not require them to behave as adults.

Criminals are not wolves. Wolves are social pack animals that rarely inflict harm on each other and hunt only for survival. Criminals hunt out of desire. They kill each other as readily as they kill the civilians they hide amongst. Again, criminals are often the way they are because at one point in their development no one required better of them than robbery, rape and murder. Some can be rehabilitated, most can only be put down like mad dogs.

I am not a sheepdog. A sheepdog is a creature that herds the sheep in accordance to the will of the shepherd. What is most likely meant when referencing a "sheepdog" is a Livestock Guardian Dog. And even they obey the will of the shepherd. And don't give me that "society is the shepherd" crap. The sheep exist to sustain the shepherd. He is no less a predator than the wolves, he just hides it better. the closest you'll find to the sheepdog analogy are LEO's and the military. Cops that do a piss-poor job of guarding the "sheep"; fairly dandy at finding out who killed Gilbert Lamb, but that's not defense, is it? The military does a bang-up job of defending the "sheep" but a military is really meant to savage the other shepherd's sheep until he agrees to quit letting his sheep eat our flock's clover.

So what are we left with? People that act like sheep, unless you demand more of them.
People that act like rabid dogs unless you demand more of them and kill the ones that cannot or will not.
People that are set apart from us because they serve the one that keeps us around to provide him with a living.

And then there's me, and those like me. We are not sheep, we are not wolves or dogs, rabid or otherwise. We obey no master save ourselves and we urge those around us to do the same. We require that we rise to the challenge of adulthood. We require of ourselves that we act as the guardians of ourselves and our kith and kin.

A Pair of My Saturdays

So a while back I’m going about my Saturday (armed, natch), and I stop to take care of some banking. Now in Alaska even in Anchorage we believe in personal responsibility and the fact that Ursus Arctos sometimes wanders into town. Hence the open carry (I personally open carry rather than concealed carry because I feel that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure). And we so believe in personal responsibility in the last frontier that you can even carry in the bank (just don’t draw, they get all twitchy when you draw).

So I’m in the credit union meyhap twenty minutes (fifteen minutes in line, five with the teller), my Five-seveN and The Blade in plain view and nobody says boo. I do my thing, finish up and didi-bop out the door, and (feeling a bit peckish) drive across the way to the Toxic Hell for a nosh. I roll through the drive-thru, get my junk and park the truck to enjoy the sun and my tunes and some "authentic faux-Mexican" cuisine. Just as I bite into my burrito, I hear a voice in my head.

Now I have heard voices off and on all my life. Usually they say things like; “Don’t do that, you’ll look stupid.” or “Try it with no hands, that’ll impress her.”, this was the first time the voices in my head said “Keep your hands where I can see them. Sir, do you have a weapon in the vehicle?”. Glancing into the side mirrors I saw not one, not two, not even three, but FOUR police cruisers blocking me into the parking space, and no less than eight police officers approaching my truck with weapons drawn.

No wanting to audition for the roll of John Dillinger, I kept my hands on the wheel and answered in the affirmative. I was then asked to list my weapons, which I did; one pistol (Five-seveN), Three knives, one large (The Blade), two small. I was then asked to exit the vehicle backwards so that the officer could secure my weapons, which I did, and the silly fucker couldn’t figure out the SERPA holster and I wound up doing it anyways. My weapons secured and unloaded I was asked for ID and then told to wait, which I did, for two minutes, before asking if it was OK to eat my (so called) food. Which after a moment’s conference it was decided that eating would not pose a serious hazard to the safety of the officers present.

While eating I casually asked one of the officers, “Not that I’m confused officer but, what’s going on?”

The officer in question looked perplexed and conferred with her colleagues for a minute and apparently reached a decision that yes, I was allowed to know what I was accused of. “Sir, were you recently in the Credit Union across the way?”

“Ayup.” I replied.

“And you were armed?” They asked.

“Ayup.” I replied.

“Were your weapons concealed?” they asked. There was a distinct feeling of “Gotcha Sucker” in the tone used.

“Nope. Not that it’d matter, law says I can carry anything not federally prohibited, concealed or openly, anywhere that is not:
a) A State or Federal reservation that prohibits the carrying of a weapon (i.e. Courthouses).
b) An establishment whose primary business is the sale or distribution of alcohol (i.e. bars & liquor stores).
c) A building or residence in which I have been asked not to carry, either through verbal or written notice (i.e. The Village Inn (posted) or my friend The Librarian’s place (verbal).

“Seeing as the Credit Union neither asked, nor posted a no weapons policy, I don’t see the problem. Is that what this is about? Four cars and eight cops to harass me over a legal carry?”

“Sir we received a call of an armed man entering the credit union.”

“So.”

“We thought perhaps there was an armed robbery in progress.”

Now, this was a full fifteen minutes after I had left the credit union. So let’s crunch some numbers here; 20 minutes in the bank, fifteen minutes at the Toxic Hell, that’s (less see 2 and 3, carry the 7…) THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES between the 911 call and boots on the ground. Anchorage is less than half that wide, and the central five-0 station is located less than 10 miles from the Credit Union.

“What?!?” I ejaculated, somewhat alarmed.

“We called and they said nothing was wrong, but we thought there might have been a hostage situation.”

“Have you talked to the credit union people since?”

“Were doing that now.”

“OK, so assuming that I didn’t rob the bank, can I go then?”

“We’re not sure about the legality of carrying a weapon in a financial institution.”

“Wut?” I asked, stunned.

“We’ve called the DA’s office and they declined to prosecute, so we’ve called the State Prosecutor’s office, we're waiting for them to get back to us.”

“Wut?” I asked, still stunned.

One of the cops gets in his car and rolls off. A few minutes later he rolls back into the lot, gets out and says “Nope it’s [the no weapons notice] not posted at the bank.”

One of the cops approaches me and tells me that they’re letting me go. My gear will be placed in the passenger seat of the truck and I am not to get in it or re-arm until they’re gone. If the State Prosecutor decides to press charges, they’ll contact me.

The tallest cop (in full alpha mode) steps up and asks “So do you think it’s a good Idea to carry a weapon in the bank anymore?”

At first I was a bit taken aback, and my ingrained respect for public servants mumbled something about “no, probably not” and then the anger kicked in. “Officer, until someone changes the law, I will carry any damn weapon I want, any damn place I feel like.”

He looked like I’d just announced that I was fucking his sister. He turned around an got in his squad car without another word.

They rolled, I re-armed and went about my day. At the end of the day, getting my stuff out of the truck I realized that I’d forgotten the TT33 in the glove box, and the City Stick in the back seat.

Oops.

Now, I told you that story, to tell you this one.

So I’m at the IHOP on a Saturday (Miniontaters and Minionberry pancakes, neither worth the price, but the Minionberry lemonade was lovely), again armed. As I’m checking out, the manager tells me that one of the other customers called the cops and reported an armed man in the restaurant. When the cops called to confirm with the restaurant, he told them it was just a patron eating his breakfast, and he’d be gone by the time they got there anyways so don’t bother.

We shared a laugh and spent a few minutes chatting about our preferred carry pieces. He carries a 1911 everywhere except work, just like me (the where, not the what). I left and went about my day.

I have learned four things from this pair of incidents.

1) Outsiders can get the fuck out of my state. Go back to Cali and New York ya pansies.
2) You never can tell who’s a real Alaskan until he’s faced with a beard and a gun. Or perhaps an angry moose.
3) When seconds count, the police are THIRTY-FIVE MINUTES away.
4) The cops neither know, nor give a rodent's rump about the law.
