The King is Dead

Kim Jong Il died over the week-end. Refered to as "Dear Leader", "Our Father", and "Supreme Leader" he was responsible for the death of somewhere between 3.3 and 7.2 million of his own people.

The King is dead. May the Norks never get another.

Death comes for us all. Even for kings he comes.

Asked and Answered

Billy Beck asks the questions "Why didn't Mike McQueary just punch Jerry Sandusky's lights out, on the spot?" and "Just exactly what sort of eunuch-drone is this, and where on earth do they come from to this country where men once knew the right thing when they saw it?".

Because he's a coward. Because he's been programed to be a coward for the entirety of his life.

From the time we are children we are told "Don't hit!" and "Fighting is wrong." As youths we are told that "Violence never solves anything." and "It's not worth fighting over." violence is discouraged through punishment; detention, suspension and expulsion. As adults we are told "It's not worth dying over." and violence of almost any form is punishable by law, both criminal and civil. Even in some cases, self defense.

Admittedly children are poor judges of what constitutes "justifiable circumstances" and youths often have a poor sense of "appropriate response". An adult however should, and must be able to make these judgements, and to have trained them not to use violence when appropriate, is a disservice to the adult and the community.

We live under the Rule of Law almost in name only. The powerful and the rich do as they please and are only occasionally called to answer for it. More often than not the punishments are light, if any at all. And punishment for those who employ violence righteously is almost as common. Yet should we shirk our duty to our community? Should we allow ourselves and our loved ones to become victims, to save ourselves from punishment?

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do
nothing.

Names

Some people do, some people don't. Tam doesn't, Brigid does. My brother doesn't, I do. Name things, that is. Some people name their instruments, most people name their boats (for better or for worse), some people even name their automobiles. You name a thing because it's important to you, because it's more than just a tool, it is an extension of you. Is it really any surprise that people name their weapons?

But by naming your weapon, perhaps you become more familiar with it. It ceases to be a tool to be used but rather a teammate or a friend with which you co-operate to accomplish a task. By learning more about your piece, becoming familiar with her, you gain a greater understanding of what you can do together. And yes, like ships, guns should be female (unless you're Russian). I have only two firearms that do not have names. Both are unfamiliar to me, we haven't spent enough time together for me to learn their names (the Ruger 10/22 and the Mauser C96), but we'll get there.

And if you think this is some silly-assed mumbo-jumbo, there's a dead serious group anyone can respect that's been following a similar practice for almost seventy years now. They just don't call them by name.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.

My rifle is human, even as I am human, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other.

Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy.

Word of warning: avoid dealing with a plastic surgeon whose only reference for human breasts has been anime. If you’re not lucky, you’ll also end up with pointy ears and a di*k.

Thoughtful Walls

Just thought I'd share some of the more thought provoking wallpapers I've found over the years. Many of these are strangely apropos for some of the blog posts I've seen recently.

Orwell was right. And seeing what's going on in the world this complaint seems justified. The next is just seemed to be a reminder of something that all too many people in the MSM seem to have forgotten. When you intentionally engineer language to mean anything what you say no longer means anything.

For those of you who don't know this Iconic image is of one Spider Jerusalem, Guerrilla Journalist. he is the leading character of a graphic novel series called Transmetropolitan written by the inestimable Warren Ellis and illustrated by one Darick Robertson. Spider Jerusalem makes Hunter S. Thompson look like a Sunday school teacher. And would agree wholeheartedly with the H. L. Menken quote presented here.

I found this next one on /k/ and while not exactly factual, the intent is true and pure; and like all true and pure things it's harder than Oðin's visage to live up to.

This last one is not really a wallpaper, but actual wall art stenciled on to a
building. I find that the sentiment expressed here rings true. "Whoever lays his hand on me to govern me, is a usurper and a tyrant and I declare him my enemy. Heady stuff.

The Difference Between an Adult and a Grown-Up.

I've been thinking a lot lately about my relationships, and why I get along so well with some people, and why others make my teeth itch. I finally came up with an answer. Those people I get along with best are Adults, Grown-ups make my teeth itch.

Now, I know what many of you are thinking, "Rauðbjørn, those words mean the same thing! Don't they?"

My response to you is "No." In a word, the difference between an Adult and a Grown-up is responsibility.

Now then, any schmuck can take responsibility for himself. Those who don't are easy to spot, just sit in on a day's worth of arraignments down at your local courthouse. Of course there are sometimes a few Adults and even a Grown-up or two mixed in, but by and large, the docket is a hit parade of 30 year old adolescents. Those too impressed by their own fart-smell or the size of their Johnson to have a care in the world, or if they care, are too broken to be able to follow the rules without a post-hypnotic suggestion and a Quaalude.

A Grown-up is someone that pays his bills, meets his rent, saves for the future, keeps his nose clean and to the grindstone. They have a dog and a white picket fence 2.3 kids and barbeques on Sunday. He is John Q. Public.

An Adult is more than this.

An Adult does not only meet their quota of responsibility, he actively picks up slack. An Adult is the guy that shows up in a flood zone, looking to help, but doesn’t live in the area. An adult is the person who, at the park, watches his neighbor’s kids along with their own. Firemen and Soldiers are excellent examples of Adults.

But it is not enough to simply help out others, to watch over them.

An Adult must constantly review what she does and why she does it. Because there is a fine line between the guarding that a soldier does, to stand vigil against the tides of oppression: and the guarding that a jailor does, standing vigil against those in need of oppression. An adult does not seek to oppress his charges, or control them. An Adult does not seek aggrandizement, nor power from his position. While they may be granted authority, it is authority born of service. As one long dead corporal once said:

I'm asking You God,
to give me what You have left.
Give me those things which others never ask of You.
I don't ask You for rest, or tranquility.
Not that of the spirit, the body, or the mind.
I don't ask You for wealth, or success, or even health.
All those things are asked of You so much Lord,
that you can't have any left to give.

Give me instead Lord what You have left.
Give me what others don't want.
I want uncertainty and doubt.
I want torment and battle.

And I ask that You give them to me now and forever Lord,
so I can be sure to always have them,
because I won't always have the strength to ask again.
But give me also the courage, the energy,
and the spirit to face them.
I ask You these things Lord,

because I can't ask them of myself.

And that is what an Adult is. One that values the safety of others more than his own, fears that he may not be up to the challenge, but does it anyway. Because he cannot ask another to do it for him.

We should all be adults, each and every one of us.
